Zombie Outbrick: Episode 17

1st Aug 2011, 12:00 AM

Does anyone notice anything different about this episode?

My camcorder, which I have been using to shoot Zombie Outbrick this entire time, would not work when I wanted to shoot this episode. I have problems with it fairly often, though each time I can get it working again by removing the battery pack, putting it back in, then plugging it in to charge.

I have been looking at better camcorders than the one I have been using for video shooting purposes, and so I bought a new high-def Canon camcorder, and it's a huge improvement in terms of video capabilities.

When my old camera wouldn't work, I thought, "Why not try shooting Episode 17 with my shiny new camcorder instead?"

And so, I did. ;)

I had to do a fair amount of retouching to get it to match the rest of the episodes, and editing was a nightmare (the new camcorder shoots in widescreen, which threw me off when framing my shots, and so all the dialogue doesn't have much room this episode.)

So what does everyone think? Does today's episode look better, or worse in terms of photography?

Let me know what you think. I haven't decided whether or not to try reshooting this episode with my older camcorder (when it works.)

First off--congrats on the new camera and the fact that you are indeed on schedule! *does a happy dance for you*

I can definitely see an improvement, btu I can also see that you are still getting used to the new cam--I understand completely :)

It's a little hard to read a bit of the dialogue, but I'm sure you'll fix that before the next episode. other than that, I think you're doing great!

(I deleted the duplicate of your comment)

Thanks MadameLecter!

I'm still not convinced that the new camcorder is better than the old one for taking pictures... But yeah, I guess the pictures are a little more crisp.

And I just had so much dialogue in this episode... I didn't realize until after I had shot it that it was proabably too much to fit in. (Karen and the Boss lost a few non-essential lines of dialogue, just because there was no way to fit them in anywhere!)

The next episode should have less dialogue again, so it shouldn't be as much of a problem! (hopefully... ;) )

I honestly don't notice a difference. If any, maybe the pictures are a LITTLE bit brighter, but YOU STILL have the level of "darkness" and "mystery" that Bricks of The Dead never had.

In fact, I'm starting to like your comic MORE than Bricks of the Dead.

I did do a bit of retouching trying to get these pictures to match ones from older episodes... So having the difference not be noticeable is a kinda what I was going for overall.

And wow, thanks Monkey, that's a HUGE compliment!

I may need to put up another quote thing on my homepage, just for awesome comments like that!

Anyway, I'm glad you're enjoying it

I love how you position the figs! Lots of "body language" in panel 4.

Thanks, ZombieMutts! Glad to finally see you here on Zombie Outbrick.

I write their poses into the script, not necessarily taking into account the limitations of the minifigure. Then when I'm shooting, I try to get as close to what I wrote as is possible with LEGO figures. It seems to work pretty well!

"Glad to finally see you here on Zombie Outbrick"

Did you get my email?

"It seems to work pretty well!"

Absolutely. It translates very well!

No, sorry, I didn't get your email. I checked for it just now, but I don't see it.

Are you sure you sent it to the right address? zombieoutbrick@yahoo.com

I have a spam folder... but I checked that, it's empty.

I don't know man, maybe you could try sending it again?

I'll see if there's any setting on my email that might be blocking things.

I'll resend when I get home. Nothing important...just a reply to a comment you made on BotD that you might be interested in.

Ah, ok. I'll be looking for it later on. (and I've turned off my spam filter for now, just in case.)

I'm gonna second and third the notions and thoughts of how yes, the pics are brighter and crisper. With the new camera it is brighter, but it's still the same tone you've been carrying before with your strips.

If I've got any problems its that of the dialogue balloons and how much there is being said.

Despite that, I like this comic as much as I do Bricks of the Dead, both of them rank up there on my top lists of read at the new release schedules.

And that poor boss, did he walk into his office to find the employee he shot has gotten up off the floor as a zombie now?

Thank you, sir!

I never thought anyone would like this comic as much as they do Bricks of the Dead, that really means alot to me.

And I'm glad that you agree that the new camera is an improvement. I wasn't sure before.

I hear you on the dialogue ballons! If I had framed the shots better so that there was more room for them, they wouldn't have ended up being so cramped. I also didn't want to cut too much dialogue, as I thought it was important for advancing the story properly.

Hopefully, once I get the hang of framing things in this new camera, I'll be able to handle the speech bubbles better.

And as for the Boss... well, you'll have to wait and see. ;)

What heppened to Chris shirt in panel 3?
I don't read botd so I don't what to tell you in that. YOUR COMIC IS REALLYB GOOD!:)

Hah, I was hoping it wasn't all that noticeable...

Chris's shirt is actually (as you may or may not be able to tell) a printed piece of paper laminated with shiny tape to make it look more LEGO-esque. There was apparently a smudge on that tape, which must have caught the light in some strange way in panel 3... I'll try to make sure that doesn't happen as much in the future!

And thank you! I'm glad you like my comic so much.

(Although I definitely think you should consider checking out BotD at some point, I consider it to be a good comic as well.)
